We are just a few weeks from WrestleMania 42, and it is unclear if one of WWE Raw’s biggest stars, Gunther, will even be on the show. Despite retiring icons like Goldberg and John Cena last year, and then AJ Styles in January, the man now known as the “Career Killer” has been MIA on Monday nights recently.
However, despite rumors that he might not get a spot on the card, a new report from Wrestle Votes Radio claims the WWE creative team still has him penciled in for a notable role in April. If that ends up being a match, let’s look at five opponents he could face at WrestleMania 42.
Penta

Penta finally got WWE gold earlier this month when he defeated Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental title. As we close in on ‘Mania, the lucha star needs a match at the event. A clash with the man that might be the greatest IC champ ever, Gunther, could be a direction the company goes. At the very least, the match could be the best on either night of the show.
Rey Mysterio

The most notable rumor about Gunther’s plans at WrestleMania is a clash with Rey Mysterio. A recent report claimed that it was in the works until the Hall of Famer’s health issues had derailed the idea. If the lucha legend can heal up, there may be just enough time to build toward a retirement bout at the April event.
LA Knight

A month ago, a rumor circulated that LA Knight would be Brock Lesnar’s opponent at WrestleMania. However, we now know “The Beast” will instead face “The Ruler.” Oba Femi. Similar to Gunther, Knight is a notable star who does not have a clear path to the April mega event. The two stars being paired up is another potential option for them at WrestleMania 42, especially if it could be a No. 1 contender match to CM Punk or Roman Reigns.
Chris Jericho

WWE fans love mystery opponents, and that could be a direction that creative takes so Gunther can get a match at WrestleMania. If that did end up being the plan, many will be hoping his opponent is future Hall of Famer Chris Jericho.
The multi-time world champion is reportedly on the outs with AEW, and all signs point to a return to WWE at some point in 2026. That happening at WrestleMania is very possible.
EVIL

Adding to the idea of a mystery opponent, another potential option could be former IWGP champion EVIL. The long-time NJPW star’s contract ended on New Year’s, and reports earlier this year claimed he was WWE-bound. A match with Gunther could be a show-stealer and would be a great way to introduce the Japanese star to unfamiliar fans.
