WTA roundup: Garbine Muguruza reaches Sydney quarters

No. 2 seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory against Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia on Wednesday at the Sydney Tennis Classic.

Muguruza saved six of the seven break points she faced and converted all three of her break chances in the one-hour, 26-minute match. Next up is Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, a 6-3, 6-4 winner against Belgium’s Elise Mertens.

No. 3 seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, No. 4 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia and No. 5 Paula Badosa of Spain also advanced with straight-set wins. No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan withdrew with a thigh injury, giving France’s Caroline Garcia a walkover win.

France’s Oceane Dodin was leading 6-2, 5-6 against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic when rain suspended play.

Adelaide International 2

Third-seeded Coco Gauff reached the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in Adelaide, Australia.

Gauff, 17, finished off the nearly two-hour match by winning the last four games. Her opponent in the final eight is Croatia’s Ana Konjuh, who rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) upset of sixth-seeded Czech Marketa Vondrousova.

No. 4 seed Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia, No. 8 Liudmila Samsonova of Russia and unseeded Americans Alison Riske and Madison Keys all won in straight sets. Another American, Lauren Davis, also advanced to the quarters with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 rally against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
