‘The World Alamac and Book of Facts 2018’ book review: More sports, please

Tom Brady

Recently, Sportsnaut was given the opportunity to peruse an advanced copy of “The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2018,” which is just jam-packed full of information. Specifically as it pertains to what we love here, the 1,008-page tome dedicates 127 pages to the world of sports.

This handy book covers the great historical achievements from all major sports, including the Olympic Games — very pertinent this year now that the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea are getting set to kick off. It’s a delight to read for any sports history buff who loves to revel in the great events of the past.

“The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2018” also dedicates an entire page to the big sporting events that took place in 2017. Starting with the College Football Playoff National Championship in January between Clemson and Alabama and the Super Bowl in February between the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, the year-in-review hits all the biggest moments from the events that defined last year.

The one thing that we’d love to see in the future, however, that was sadly missing in this year’s edition, was a specific section that highlighted all the records that were broken in major sports like the NFL, MLB and the NBA. The individual sports sections did include tons of stats and all the high marks, and all-time records were highlighted as well. But we were still left wanting.

If you have the determination to dig deep, all the information is there. But it’s not exactly user-friendly when considering the ease at which information is made available these days online.

We’d have loved to see some more pictures, as well, though that may speak to our short attention span.

All in all, “The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2018” is a book we’d highly recommend to anyone who loves to study history. Whether you’re a sports fan who gets off on stats, a news buff who loves to review all the biggest stories around the world or a person who prefers paper over a keyboard when doing reference work, this book is a valuable resource.
