Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova pulled out of the Adelaide International with a right hip injury Tuesday, casting doubt over her availability for the Australian Open.
It was not immediately known how serious Vondrousova’s injury was or if her status for the first Grand Slam of the year next week would be impacted.
Vondrousova, the No. 7 seed in the women’s draw at the Australian Open set to begin in five days, was replaced by lucky loser Taylor Townsend in Adelaide. Townsend defeated Russian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance to the second round.
Vondrousova, from the Czech Republic, played in the United Cup in Perth, Australia, losing a Dec. 30 match to China’s Qinwen Zheng.
In 2023, Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon, defeating 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.
