Quinn Sullivan’s late strike from outside the box at the arc helped the Philadelphia Union salvage a point with a 1-1 draw against CF Montreal on Saturday night in Chester, Pa.
The Union (8-5-8, 32 points) kept pace near the top of the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference standings with their seventh win at home this season. They have two wins and two draws in four games in August, and are unbeaten in nine straight games at Subaru Park.
Sullivan’s 87th-minute goal, just the attacking midfielder’s second of the season, tied the score after Montreal (7-7-7, 28 points) led for almost all of the second half. Djordje Mihailovic scored for Montreal in first-half stoppage time.
In the 39th minute, the Union had a chance for the lead. A quick set piece came to Daniel Gazdag in the box, and the midfielder tried a poke with the outside of his right foot that missed inches over the cross bar of the net.
Instead, it was Montreal that took major momentum into halftime.
Forward Joaquin Torres did the heavy lifting, twisting and turning with the ball before sending a cross toward the goal. Mihailovic was there to put it away in stoppage time, about a minute before the whistle.
A header from close range by Aljaz Struna in the 84th minute just missed giving Montreal a two-goal lead. Then Sullivan scored off an assist from Jack Elliott moments later.
The Union outshot Montreal 13-9, but the visitors had five shots on target to one for the Union, the one on which they scored. Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake had four saves.
Montreal has draws in four of its last six matches but remains in playoff contention as the seventh-place team in the East.
