WATCH: Patrick Mahomes pays tribute to Negro Leagues with throwback

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is an obvious student of history.

Knowing full well his place as the face of the Chiefs in a city rich with sports history, Mahomes showed that in a big way ahead of Sunday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The reigning NFL MVP showed up to the game at Arrowhead sporting a darn awesome Kansas City Monarchs throwback baseball jersey.

That’s some pure fire right there. It’s also a representation of a time that the idea of an African-American quarterback in the NFL was utterly absurd.

The Monarchs played in the now-defunct Negro Leagues. They were a charter member of the league when MLB’s color barrier had not yet been broken by Jackie Robinson.

Among those who suited up for the Monarchs during their time as either a member of the Negro Leagues or as an independent baseball team were Ernie Banks, Satchel Paige and the above-mentioned Jackie Robinson.

Great stuff, Mr. Mahomes.
