A bizarre and slightly unsettling situation unfolded during Friday’s second round of the Scottish Open, as Rory McIlroy had a club and headcover of his stolen right out of his bag from a fan.
Golf Digest‘s Nicole Rae passed on the video, as McIlroy, his caddie, and tournament leader and reigning U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm stood on the tee box nonplussed by the man’s antics:
It appears as though said fan was about to smash the headcover with McIlroy’s stick. Finally, security intervened when Rahm’s caddie called someone over. The overall response was a little slow, but the man eventually gave the club and the headcover back.
McIlroy was among those pushing Rahm at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, ultimately finishing in a tie for seventh. Now, the Northern Irishman is gearing up for the Open Championship by making a couple starts across the pond to get his feel for links golf back.
After finishing just tied for 57th at the Irish Open last week, McIlroy posted rounds of 70 and 71 at the Renaissance Club, in North Berwick, Scotland, which has him in danger of missing the cut.
The Open Championship tees off next week on Thursday, July 15, at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, England. According to DraftKings, Rahm (+700) is the favorite, followed by McIlroy (+1100), Dustin Johnson (+1200) and Brooks Koepka (+1400).
