Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith drops back to pass

Alex Smith nearly lost his life after suffering one of the most gruesome injuries in NFL history.

Now he’s working to get back onto the football field. And his recovery is going better than anyone could imagine.

On Thursday, Smith celebrates his 36th birthday. The former No. 1 overall pick has been working tirelessly to get back into football shape. To celebrate him and his remarkable recovery from the injury that nearly took him from this world, his wife shared video of him on the field.

It’s absolutely stunning.

If you’ve seen the ESPN documentary chronicling Smith’s saga that aired last Friday, it’s almost impossible to believe Smith is able to do any of that at this time. What he had to go through just to save his leg, and his life, is nothing short of extraordinary.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s a portion of the stunning footage. But before you play it, be warned that it contains graphic images that some may not be prepared to witness.
