With as many as five quarterbacks projected to be selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, all eyes are on the top of the draft order. While there aren’t any questions about what the Chicago Bears will do, there’s still a lot of public uncertainty about the Washington Commanders.
After trading last year’s starter Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks and replacing him with Marcus Mariota, the one obvious fact is that the Commanders will be drafting a quarterback. But who? And when?
The strongest signs point to the Commanders staying put and selecting the best player available on their draft board at No. 2 overall. But again, the public doesn’t know whether that prospect is Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, or J.J. McCarthy.
Yet, NFL Network’s Albert Breer is as tuned into league sources as anyone, and the one name he keeps hearing linked to the Commanders is LSU’s Jayden Daniels.
“There’s some conflicting information out there about what the Commanders are going to do at two. I would say, there’s very little talk that they would trade out. One way or the other, I think it’s gonna be a quarterback. The name I continue to hear the most is Jayden Daniels, but again, I don’t feel like I can say as strongly that I think it will be Jayden Daniels as I can the Bears will be (taking) Caleb Williams.”

Daniels overtaking Maye as the presumed No. 2 overall pick is a new development compared to the consensus throughout the majority of the 2023 football season, yet few anticipated such an incredible year from the Heisman-winning QB.
However, it’s not just NFL insiders who hear Daniels linked to the Commanders; even his former LSU Tigers head coach, Brian Kelly, accidentally mentioned Washington as his next team. For all we know, Daniels to the Commanders is already locked in, yet, draft day is always full of surprises.
