While in many ways the move was foreshadowed both by the New England Patriots’ recent struggles in addition to several leaked reports, Bill Belichick won’t be with the franchise he’s coached for the past 24 years in 2024. It’s a monumental development in the career of a future first-ballot Hall of Fame head coach.

Yet, once Belichick became available, the belief was that the six-time Super Bowl winner would have no trouble landing on his feet in another organization. However, after all eight NFL head coaching vacancies have been filled, it’s safe to say, the NFL’s interest in Belichick becoming a head coach just wasn’t there. But that doesn’t mean a few teams didn’t register at least some level of interest.

We’d previously heard all about how the Atlanta Falcons were nearing a decision to hire Bill Belichick after two interviews with the former Patriots coach. We know now that Atlanta decided to hire Raheem Morris instead, possibly due to the lingering questions over how much control Belichick wanted over the organization.

But the Falcons weren’t the only team who found themselves enamored with hiring the defensive genius who has a total of eight Super Bowls to his name as a coordinator and coach.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Washington Commanders also had interest in hiring Belichick before hiring Dan Quinn.

The Commanders even spoke with Belichick about their head coaching vacancy, and some of the team’s decision-makers put their support behind the former Patriots coach. Yet, as we know now, the Commanders opted to hire Quinn instead.

So what’s next for Belichick? The world is his oyster, but when it comes to being an NFL head coach in 2024, that door seems closed. However, there are several other jobs that could theoretically interest the coaching legend.
