There are some abilities you just can’t teach. Generational 2023 NBA Draft prospect Victor Wembanyama has these traits in spades. Not only is Wemby 7-foot-2, he’s also not afraid to let it fly from distance, averaging 5.3 3PT attempts per game.
Wembanyama, the consensus No. 1 pick in June’s NBA Draft, is playing for the Metropolitans 92 team, based in France, where he’s taking the league by storm. NBA scouts and draft experts can’t get enough of Wembanyama’s tape thus far, and he only continues to amaze with each game he plays.
On Sunday, Wembanyama managed to pull off a feat we’re not sure we’ve ever seen before. Here he attempts a stepback three, which he saw wasn’t going to be on-target, so he sprung toward the rim, leaping at the perfect time while somehow also predicting the perfect rebound location to throw down a putback slam.
This is straight out of a video game. It has to be, right?
Sure, we’ve seen players successfully convert their own putbacks, but not from distance. Wembanyama is simply in a class of his own, as if we didn’t already know that.

While some are skeptical of Wembanyama’s ability to dominate at the next level, the more frequently we see outstanding efforts like this, the easier it is to see his skills translating to the NBA just fine.
