New York Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin tested positive for COVID-19 and is under quarantine in Tampa, Fla., the team announced Tuesday.

There is the possibility of other members being affected as ESPN reported that five coaches also received news of positive tests.

The Yankees released a statement that only addressed Nevin, who has previously been vaccinated for the coronavirus.

“We have a breakthrough positive involving 3B Coach Phil Nevin, who is fully vaccinated,” the team said. “He is currently under quarantine protocol in Tampa. Under Major League Baseball’s guidance and advice, and with its assistance, additional testing and contact tracing are ongoing.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he expected that Tuesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays would go on as scheduled. He also said some other coaches are quarantining away from the team.

Boone said first base coach Reggie Willits was unavailable for the game but declined to identify the COVID-19 situation as the reason. Mario Garza, who works in a player development role, is filling in as first base coach.

Bench coach Carlos Mendoza was slated to replace Nevin as third base coach.

The 50-year-old Nevin hit 208 career homers over 12 major league seasons (1995-2006) with seven teams. He was a National League All-Star in 2001 when he recorded career highs of 41 homers and 126 RBIs for the San Diego Padres.
