The Toronto Ultra beat the Atlanta FaZe in the winners-bracket final before getting the best of them once again in the grand final to win the Call of Duty League’s Stage 1 Major on Sunday in Boston.
After falling 3-1 to Toronto in the winners final, the FaZe were sent to the elimination-bracket final, where they ousted OpTic Texas 3-1 to set up a rematch with the Ultra.
Still, Toronto had Atlanta’s number, and this time it cruised to a 4-1 victory to claim the first-place prize of $150,000 and 100 Call of Duty League points.
In the grand final, the Ultra picked up wins on Karachi Hardpoint (250-239) and Skidrow Search & Destroy (6-2) before the FaZe took Invasion Control 3-1. Toronto answered with a 250-237 victory on Skidrow Hardpoint, then clinched the title with a 6-2 showing on Karachi Search & Destroy.
Great Britain’s Jamie “Insight” Craven was the Ultra’s only player with a positive kill-death ratio (plus-1.42), and he finished with a team-high 85 kills. American Chris “Simp” Lehr had a match-best 88 kills for Atlanta.
Things played out similarly when the two teams met in the winners-bracket final, as Toronto jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The FaZe stayed alive with a narrow 3-2 win on Invasion Control, but the Ultra punched their ticket to the grand final with a 250-128 blowout on Sub Base Hardpoint.
Thomas “Scrappy” Ernst of the United States led Toronto, racking up 83 kills. Fellow American McArthur “Cellium” Jovel totaled 76 for the FaZe.
Atlanta dominated Texas for the most part, clubbing it 250-169 on Terminal Hardpoint and 6-3 on Invasion Search & Destroy. OpTic stole Invasion Control 3-1, but the FaZe moved on thanks to a 250-212 triumph on Invasion Hardpoint.
Texas made it to the elimination final by way of a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Rokkr in the fourth round of the bracket.
