UFC middleweight Sean Strickland once again showed why he is a public relations nightmare for the UFC with another bizarre rant ahead of his return this weekend at UFC Fight Night: Houston.
There is no denying that Strickland is a talented fighter. You don’t rise up the UFC middleweight rankings and become a champion in the top mixed martial arts promotion of all time without world-class talent. However, the 34-year-old’s prowess in the Octagon is often overshadowed by his views of the world.
Strickland has developed a reputation for not having a filter between his thoughts and his mouth and has offered up many opinions about social issues that often go viral on social media for the wrong reasons. That was the case again on Wednesday during his media day ahead of his clash with Anthony Hernandez in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main event.
Sean Strickland says women should be having kids and making food, not fighting
During his conversation with the media, the topic of the recently made fight between women’s MMA pioneers Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano arose, and the former UFC champion did not hide his disdain for that ladies’ side of the sport or women’s sports in general.
“Do you guys care about Gina and Ronda? Nobody gives a f***… But really, not many people give a f*** about women’s MMA in general,” he said. “It’s like the WNBA. Nobody gives a f*** about women’s sports.”
Strickland would go on to say that you can take the “weakest motherf*****” in the room and they could beat former two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes. He also added that women shouldn’t be fighting, and they should instead be doing what they “excel” at. Which to him is “having kids, being mothers, making food, cleaning the house.”
For fans hoping that the UFC pulls Sean Strickland aside and lets him know that isn’t acceptable, the past shows they shouldn’t hold their breath.
