Paddy Pimblett (23-3) wasn’t too thrilled to hear about Islam Makhachev’s remarks over his lack of noteworthy opponents.
The native of Liverpool, England, has been linked to rumors about UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria’s next opponent. Given the history and animosity between them, there is plenty of anticipation and interest in a grudge match.
Especially after a tense altercation inside the octagon, where Topuria gave Pimblett a hard shove in June. “El Matador” had claimed the vacant UFC lightweight title after he knocked out Charles Oliveira in the first round at UFC 317.
It seemed all but certain that the buildup to Topuria’s first title defense at 155 pounds had already begun.
Makhachev, however, recently aimed at Pimblett. The former undisputed UFC lightweight champion questioned how Pimblett would earn a title shot, given the level of opposition he has faced. Well, the Englishman had a response this week.
Pimblett over other big names at 155 pounds?
“Islam was chatting pony the other day,” Pimblett told UFC Europe. “Saying, ‘Who have I beat?’ He got a title shot at lightweight after beating Bobby Green. Someone who I beat faster than you, you little bum.”
There hasn’t been any official confirmation of negotiations taking place for a fight between Pimblett and Topuria. Other potential opponents include former interim UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje. As Arman Tsarukyan will take on Dan Hooker at UFC Fight Night on Nov. 22, it’s possible that a victory can place Tsarukyan into consideration.
“The Baddy” has undoubtedly established himself as one of the top fighters at 155 pounds. He is coming off two consecutive Performance of the Night bonuses in his last two outings. A submission victory over Bobby Green at UFC 304 in July 2024. And a TKO win against Michael Chandler at UFC 314 in April.
As Pimblett is currently ranked No. 6 in the UFC’s lightweight rankings, it remains a question if he’ll get the call over other competitors in the division. In the aftermath of Makhachev’s comments, Pimblett issued a challenge to the former 155-pound kingpin.
“So, how about that one, Islam?” said Pimblett. “Get back down to lightweight. And I’ll punch your head in as well.”
