Conor McGregor has once again sent the mixed martial arts world into a tailspin with a fleeting social media post that suggests his long-awaited return to the Octagon is imminent.
On Wednesday morning, the Irish superstar took to X to share a major update regarding his fighting future, only to delete the message moments later.
Before the post was scrubbed from his profile, fans and media members captured screenshots of the declaration, which read: “I have been offered an opponent and a date and I accept. Waiting on my contract.”
The timing of the deleted tweet has fueled intense speculation that McGregor is inching closer to securing a spot on the UFC’s historic “White House” event. Just days prior, UFC CEO Dana White admitted that the framework for the June card was largely in place.
While White attempted to temper expectations by clarifying, “I didn’t say it was done; I said the card was built,” the breadcrumbs are leading many to believe that the promotion is finalizing a big headliner involving their biggest star. McGregor himself has been vocal about wanting to compete on the South Lawn, viewing the event as the only stage grand enough for his comeback.
The list of potential dance partners for McGregor remains a hot topic of debate. Michael Chandler, who coached opposite McGregor on The Ultimate Fighter Season 31, has been the presumptive opponent for nearly two years. The pair were scheduled to clash in June 2024 before a broken toe forced McGregor to withdraw, leaving Chandler in competitive limbo.
However, other names have gained traction in recent weeks. Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington have both campaigned for the slot, but it is Nate Diaz who has generated the most buzz.
In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Diaz stated, “I’m ready to get back in real action. I want to fight either McGregor, maybe Dustin Poirier if he stops being such a p*ssy, and maybe Mike Perry.” McGregor seemingly reciprocated the interest on Instagram, hinting that the trilogy fight could finally come to fruition.
McGregor has been sidelined since July 2021, when he suffered a leg break in his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. His road to recovery has been a roller coaster, complicated by legal issues and a lengthy absence from the USADA testing pool. However, with his anti-doping suspension set to lift on March 20, the timing aligns perfectly for a summer return.
