Following UFC Qatar, middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev and welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry got into a bizarre altercation backstage on Saturday.
On Saturday in Doha, Garry scored one of the biggest wins of his young career when he defeated former 170-pound champion Belal Muhammad in the co-main event of UFC Qatar. Over three hard-fought rounds, he showed his well-rounded game by shutting down his opponent’s wrestling and outpointing his foe.
Also on that card, Chimaev’s pal and training partner Arman Tsarukyan scored a dominant win over Dan Hooker in the show’s main event. The win solidified his place as the undisputed No. 1 contender at lightweight. Following the show, Garry and Chimaev crossed paths, and things got heated between the talented fighters.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Garry is seen dressed up after his victory and speaking with Chimaev after the main event. At first, things are very friendly and respectful. Garry turns around back around to speak some more with the 185-pound champion, but this time, the 185-pound champion was bothered about something, said a couple of words, and then shoved Garry.
Garry called Chimaev “childish” for the random shove, and the Russian fighter let him know that he will “****” him up. The moment was so odd that Tsarukyan even told Garry everything was cool and gave the Irishman a thumbs up.
Whatever the reason for Chimaev’s anger, this is sure to add heat to a potential fight between them if the welterweight star ever decides to go up to middleweight.
