This is typically the type of fight that would be reserved for a bigger stage. Although, UFC head Dana White has made it clear that this year is going to be defined by absolutely mammoth bouts.

That’s no more true than Saturday’s announcement that Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington will take on one another Sept. 19 at the Apex in Las Vegas headlining UFC Fight Night that Saturday evening.

This has the potential to be absolutely huge. With consecutive unanimous decision losses to the top-ranked fighters in the welterweight division, Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns, the 38-year-old Woodley is in massive need of a win here.

Meanwhile, Covington lost the title fight to Usman in the headliner of UFC 245 last December. He has not fought since.

We’re sure both Burns and Usman will be watching this intently. Burns missed out on his chance to go up against the champ earlier in the year after testing positive for COVID-19. That title bout should take place at some point later this year.

Whoever comes out on top between Woodley and Covington will likely be the next in line.
