New Orleans Pelicans guard Tyreke Evans has once again teamed up with VSP Vision Care to provide free eye exams and glasses for children in need. This is a program he’s been helping to grow in his home town of Chester, Pa. since joining the Pelicans in 2013.

For Evans, this is a chance to give back to the community that helped raise him to his current status as an NBA superstar.

I wanted to give back to the people back home,” Evans explained back in 2013 (h/t NBA.com). “A lot of kids don’t even know that they need glasses, so we decided to give them free eye exams. Many of them are surprised that they need them. But it’s important that they get their eyes checked. To play sports or to do a lot of things, you need to have good vision.”

In an age when it seems all we see on the news are stories of tragedy and embarrassment, it’s nice to find stories like this one. Kindness and generosity are qualities that raise people up, and we commend Evans and others like him who spend their time and effort to dole them out for those who need the help.
