The Boston Red Sox are set to open their 60-game schedule July 23 at Fenway Park against the Baltimore Orioles.

Though, there could be some complications in the form of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic plaguing the United States.

It remains to be seen what this might mean for the Red Sox as they prepare for the 2020 season. Though, there’s a good chance both players will miss the opener.

Eduardo Rodriguez is the closest thing the Red Sox have to an ace

With Chris Sale out for the season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery, Rodriguez is now Boston’s best starter.

He pitched to a 19-6 record with a 3.81 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 34 starts last season. Given that he’s feeling symptoms, it’s hard to imagine the 27-year-old hurler being ready for Opening Day.

Top prospect Bobby Dalbec is set to make an impact

According to MLB.com, the slugger ranks third among Red Sox prospects heading into the 2020 season. The former fourth-round pick split time between Double-A and Triple-A last season, hitting .239 with 27 homers and 73 RBI.

This is just a continuation of the issues relating to the virus as the 2020 MLB season gets going in about two weeks.

More than anything, it’s been a testing issue for baseball. Some teams still have not received the results of tests conducted last week. That could lead to further troubles as the season attempts to start amid the growing pandemic.
