Just three weeks after being placed on the injured list with inflammation in his right shoulder, Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Casey Mize resumed throwing on Friday.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Tigers general manager Al Avila announced the team’s No. 1 prospect threw three innings in the Gulf Coast League on Friday and will now head to High-A Lakeland for another rehab outing on Wednesday.

Mize’s return to the mound is excellent news for the Tigers given the delicate nature of shoulder injuries. The 22-year-old was outstanding before dealing with inflammation in his pitching shoulder and quickly rose up consensus prospect rankings.

The right-handed pitcher started the season at High-A Lakeland and obliterated the competition with a 0.35 ERA, 0.31 WHIP and 25/1 K/BB ratio across 26 innings. He threw a no-hitter in his Double-A debut and dominated that level as well with a 1.21 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 50/11 K/BB ratio in 52 innings.

Mike is rated as the No. 8 prospect in baseball by Baseball America and is ranked as the second-best prospect in the minors by MLB Pipeline. He likely will make his MLB debut at some point during the 2020 season.
