Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer has been on the injured list for a few weeks with a nagging back injury, but he’s finally set to make his return.

Manager Dave Martinez told reporters Sunday that he expects Scherzer to come off the injured list and start Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

This is obviously great news for both Scherzer and the Nats, who are 5.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East heading into Sunday.

Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young winner, has been dominant this year when healthy. In 20 games, he has tallied 134.1 innings of work, posting a 9-5 record with a 2.41 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, along with 189 strikeouts and just 25 walks.
