After a week in the Arizona desert, the PGA Tour heads for one final event along the United States west coast for The Genesis Invitational at the famous Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., which is about 20 miles west of Los Angeles and just north of Santa Monica.
This tournament is the third Signature event on the PGA Tour 2024 schedule and it is the first of three player-hosted invitationals, along with the Arnold Palmer Invitational next month and the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament in June. As a result, it is a loaded field making their way to the historic Riviera Country Club that has been the host for many major tournaments in the past and will be the host for the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2028 Summer Olympics men’s and women’s golf competitions.
Last week, Nick Taylor birdied five of his final six holes, including two in a playoff, to secure a come-from-behind victory at the WM Phoenix Open. It is his fourth PGA Tour victory and first since his dramatic 72-foot eagle putt for the win at the RBC Canadian Open last year.
This week, 82-time PGA Tour winner Tiger Woods is making his season debut. Woods, who is also the tournament host, is gearing up to play 72 holes after announcing his new clothing brand earlier this week, in partnership with Taylormade. He played the unofficial event, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas a couple months ago and completed all four rounds with a score of even par that showed him dusting off some rust.
This will be Woods’ first official start since competing at last year’s Masters where he withdrew in the second round due to a plantar fasciitis injury. He also tied for 45th last year at The Genesis Invitation
Riviera Country is par-71, measuring 7,322 yards that will test every part of a player’s game, especially of the drivable par-4 10th because unlike other drivable par-4s, the green is narrow and there are greenside bunkers all around, making it a challenge as players even go from one bunker to another.

How much are tickets for The Genesis Invitational?
Tickets to walk the grounds at The Genesis Invitational begin at $99 and prices increase for elevated access, such as The Bluffs and The Backlot hospitality venues.
To grow the game, children 15 and under are admitted free for a complimentary grounds ticket into The Genesis Invitational when accompanied by a ticketed adult. College students as well as teachers are eligible to receive 25% off regularly priced ground tickets.
For active, retired, reserve and National Guard military members, complimentary grounds tickets are available, while supplies last. Military veterans can receive 50% off for a grounds ticket.
Payout for The Genesis Invitational 2024
The total purse is $20 million, and the winner will receive $3.6 million. In addition, the winner will receive 700 points towards the FedEx Cup standings.
Who are some of the top golfers in The Genesis Invitational field?
This loaded field is comprised of 10 of the top 11 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, including world No. 8 Max Homa, who is looking to win for his second time at Riviera after doing so in 2021.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler competes this week, coming up just short last week at the WM Phoenix where he was trying to become the player since Steve Stricker to win the same tournament three years in a row. He had the lead early during the final round, but could not quite finish the job, placing third.
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy comes into Los Angeles looking to captialize off his struggling performance during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he could find any ways to score or he make some birdies and then give it away with mutliple bogeys or a triple bogey.
Charley Hoffman, who was last week’s runner-up, recorded his first top-10 on the PGA Tour in two years and will be competing this week by earning a spot through the Aon Swing 5. Also qualifying from the Aon Swing 5 included Grayson Murray, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Kevin Yu and Matthieu Pavon. However, since Pavon has decided not to play this week, Justin Thomas (No. 6) takes his place this week.
Adam Scott received a sponsor exemption to play this week. Scott has plenty of success at Riviera that feature two victories in 2005 and 2020 with seven top-10s in 15 starts and only one missed cut.
5 players with the best chance to win The Genesis Invitational trophy on Sunday
Max Homa
Max Homa is a California who is looking for his seventh PGA Tour win and his fifth in the state of California alone. In his last four trips around the Riviera property, he has finished no worse than 10th, which came two years ago. Last year, he was the runner up and the year before his victory in 2021, he finished tied for fifth.
Although Homa has not played the best this season, with a T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open being his top performance (no top-10s in four events), he is primed for a rebound in his hometown.
Cameron Young
Cameron Young is starting to turn things around, especially after finishing tied for eighth at the WM Phoenix Open last week. Evan after struggling at Pebble Beach when the weather was not his friend, last week showed a better performance and maybe even had the chance of contending if it was for his even par-71 during Sunday’s final round.
Last week he was fourth in strokes gained off the tee and seventh in strokes gained putting while ranking 25th in greens in regulation. I think the putting is the underrated statistic to watch this week because of how important it will be to find greens and get on the putting surface. However, to Young’s credit, he was also third in scrambling in Arizona.
Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland comes into The Genesis Invitational looking to get things after taking the week off from the WM Phoenix Open. Hovland struggled at Pebble Beach, firing back-to-back even par 72s in the second and third rounds where he could not find any momentum. As a result, taking the week off to reset is probably a good thing.
Hovland is coming off a 2022-23 season where he won three times, including going back-to-back at the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship to secure the FedEx Cup title. His other win came at the Memorial, which was a designated event last year.
Wyndham Clark
Despite a T41 finish at the WM Phoenix Open, he was coming off one of his best rounds that he will ever play in his career when he recorded a 12-under 60 in the third round at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that broke the course record on that historic course.
From one historic course to another, Clark will be making his fifth start at this tournament where he finished as high as eighth in 2021. He will look to carry his Los Angeles winning momentum after winning last year’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Calub which is only six miles away from Riviera.
Ludvig Aberg
Luddvig Aberg have come on strong since a disappointing Hawaii swing. In two events at the Farmers Insurance Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he has two top 10s. He tied for ninth at Torrey Pines and was the runner-up at Pebble Beach to Clark.
His all-around game is solid as he does not rank no worse than 98th in any strokes gained category. He’s top 40 in strokes gained total, tee to green and approach the green. In addition, since turning pro last July, only two players – Scheffler and McIlroy – have better scoring averages, according to Justin Ray. In that span, he also leads all players in eagles and birdies per round and is second in greens in regulation.
