Texans move on from OC George Godsey

Following their blowout loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Playoffs this past weekend, the Houston Texans are shaking up their coaching staff.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle‘s John McClain, the Texans and offensive coordinator George Godsey have mutually agreed to part ways.

Godsey was the Texans’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons after following Bill O’Brien from the New England Patriots. Though, it’s O’Brien himself that’s been tasked with calling plays for Houston.

This will lead to some questions.

If Godsey was indeed the fall guy here, what exactly does that tell us about O’Brien? After all, it’s the head coach that oversaw an offense that finished in the bottom five of the NFL in total yards and points scored during the regular season.

It remains to be seen just how much of an impact this will have. O’Brien himself refused to commit to struggling quarterback Brock Osweiler as the starter for the 2017 season.

Though, Osweiler is set to count $19 million against the cap with a $25 million dead cap hit should he be released. It’s in this that the Texans are seemingly forced to keep him on the roster. Osweiler is coming off a three-interception performance against the Patriots this past Saturday.

For his part, O’Brien’s job status remained up in the air until just recently.
