The Houston Texans have reportedly begun “very preliminary” discussions with star quarterback Deshaun Watson about a contract extension.

ESPN’s Ed Werder shared the news after the Texans gave left tackle Laremy Tunsil the richest contract in NFL history for an offensive lineman, noting “Watson is the next priority” and that the Texans hope to have a deal done before the start of the 2020 NFL season.

Watson was the 12th overall pick in 2017. The Texans have two more years of control over him as things currently stand, with him entering the fourth year of his rookie deal. However, the team would apparently rather get a deal done before the quarterback market rises any more in the next year or so.

One of the most electric, productive young quarterbacks in the league, Watson is worth building around to be sure. Last year, his third in the NFL, he passed for 3,852 yards with 26 touchdowns, adding 413 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
