Tarleton State coach Billy Gillispie out for medical issue

Tarleton State basketball coach Billy Gillispie will miss his team’s upcoming games in the SoCal Challenge because of “medical circumstances,” the university announced Sunday.

The school did not specify the medical issue.

Assistant coach Joseph Jones will take over on an acting basis for Tarleton State, which plays Austin Peay on Monday and either Cal State Bakersfield or Sacramento State on Wednesday.

The games will be played in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Gillispie, 64, in his fourth season at Tarleton State of the Western Athletic Conference and has a 43-46 record.

He previously was the head coach of UTEP (2002-04), Texas A&M (2004-07), Kentucky (2007-09) and Texas Tech (2011-12). He has a career record of 191-154.
