Defending champion and yellow jersey-bearer Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia won the mountainous Stage 17 of the Tour de France on Wednesday at Saint-Lary-Soulan Col du Portet to extend his overall lead.

Pogacar won the 110-mile stage in five hours, three minutes, 31 seconds, ahead of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard and Richard Carapaz of Ecuador. He also won Stage 5.

“It was a fantastic day. To win in yellow is something I cannot describe,” Pogacar said.

Vingegaard is now in second place overall, five minutes, 39 seconds behind Pogacar. Carapaz is in third, four seconds behind Vingegaard.

Thursday’s mountain Stage 18 runs about 80 miles from Pau to Luz Ardiden.

The 108th edition of the Tour de France concludes in Paris on Sunday.
