Suns meeting with top coaching candidate Monty Williams Friday

As his Philadelphia 76ers prepare for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Saturday, assistant coach Monty Williams has other things on his mind.

Considered a top candidate to replace the unceremoniously ousted Igor Kokoskov as the Phoenix Suns head coach, Williams will meet with the team in Toronto on Friday.

Williams, 47, remains one of the most respected coaches in the NBA. He served as the New Orleans Pelicans/Hornets head coach from 2010-15, leading the team to two playoff appearances in five seasons.

Williams coaching career took a backseat to a personal tragedy back in 2016 when his wife, Ingrid, died from injuries suffered in a car accident.

After taking some time away from the game, Williams returned to be Brett Brown’s top assistant with the Sixers this season. He’d be a major hire for a Suns team with a young core group.
