Steve Young: Randy Moss, Terrell Owens need to be in the Hall of Fame

Steve Young, who played with Terrell Owens and saw firsthand what a nightmare Randy Moss was during his heyday, argued Saturday that both receivers need to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Young noted that one of the big reasons both players deserve to be in — quite aside from their Hall of Fame stats — is that both of them changed the game.

“Terrell Owens created a new position at wide receiver, called the ‘big strong’ — Julio Jones, Calvin Johnson, you know, just made available guys that were just super strong, super big,” Young said. “Why did I throw to him on the last play of the game? Because who else are you going to throw it to who can make those kinds of plays? He changed the position. So in that way, he’s also a Hall of Famer.

“Randy Moss — one of the greatest athletes that ever touched the football field.”

You won’t hear any arguments from this scribe. It’s a shame that both players weren’t first-ballot Hall of Famers, as far as I’m concerned.

For the record, Owens is No. 2 all time in receiving yardage (15,934), while Moss is No. 4 (15,292). Moss is No. 2 all time in receiving touchdowns (156), while Owens is No. 3 (153). These are two of the greatest receivers to ever play the game of football. Without question, not only do they deserve to be in but it’s asinine that Hall of Fame voters have kept them out to begin with.
