Plenty of people have plenty to say about the impending defections of the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma from the Big 12 for the greener pastures of the SEC. Leave it to the “head ball coach” to sum the situation up succinctly — and brutally.
Steve Spurrier, who coached 23 seasons in the SEC at Florida and South Carolina and maintained a reputation throughout both tenures for needling his opponents, always has thoughts to share about the league, and he wasn’t shy about telling the Orlando Sentinel his opinions on this latest realignment news.
“I can understand Texas jumping over,” Spurrier told the Sentinel. “They get to play Texas A&M again … They can’t win the Big 12 anyway.”
Ouch.
Texas last won the Big 12 in 2009. Since then, five different teams have won at least a share of the league crown, even factoring in Oklahoma’s run of six straight titles.
It’s that level of success, however, that has Spurrier conversely scratching his head about the Sooners.
“I just don’t think they’re going to come over to the SEC and win with any regularity the way that they win the Big 12,” he said. “Their fans might say, ‘Yeah, now we can beat Alabama and LSU and all these dudes.’ It may not happen like that.”
The SEC is expected to vote for Texas and Oklahoma to be admitted to the league Thursday.
