Stars edge Panthers thanks to missed chip shot

Michigan’s Michael Carrizosa missed a 21-yard field-goal attempt off the left upright as time expired, allowing the Philadelphia Stars to escape with a 26-25 victory over the Panthers on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.

On the final drive, the Panthers moved 47 yards on 12 plays, getting the ball to the 3-yard line before calling timeout with three seconds to play. They sent on Carrizosa, but he couldn’t deliver the winning kick.

The Stars (2-2) moved on top with 5:19 to play on a 21-yard field goal from Matt Mengel. Philadelphia quarterback Case Cookus completed 22 of 30 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Reggie Corbin gained 152 yards on 12 carries for Michigan (1-3), including an 88-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Panthers QB Shea Patterson was intercepted three times. He threw for 67 yards and a score on 9-of-17 passing.
