Not too often does anyone of substance enter the NFL through its annual supplemental draft. The past two well-known players to use this underutilized draft were Terrelle Pryor in 2011 and Josh Gordon in 2012.
We can now fully expect star Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander to join that small list. According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the 6-foot-3 defensive back is expected to enter this year’s supplemental draft.
A three-year starter for the Hokies, Alexander has recorded 159 tackles, 17 passes defended and seven interceptions.
Expected to enter this year’s NFL Draft, Alexander’s off-field issues while at Virginia Tech became a major detriment for him.
Back in 2016, the physical defensive back was arrested on misdemeanor drug charges and suspended by the Hokies’ football program. There’s also been other character concerns surrounding him.
Should a team decide to take a chance on the cornerback, it would have to give up a 2019 NFL Draft pick in the same round that it takes Alexander this summer.
Despite this, we wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander were selected within the first four rounds of this year’s supplemental draft.
