Dominican Republic’s St. Louis Cardinals facility broken into by robbers

The St. Louis Cardinals didn’t have the season they had hoped for, finishing with just 71 wins, the fewest they’ve had since 1995. The Cards didn’t reach the postseason for the first time in five years.

But now the Cardinals are in the news for reasons unrelated to their performance on the baseball diamond.

According to the Associated Press, the Cardinals’ Dominican Republic facility was under attack by armed robbers on Friday.

Authorities are seeking at least five people believed to be involved in the crime, which included leaving a security guard bound and gagged while the thieves stole necklaces, rings, watches, and other various items belonging to athletes and other members of team personnel.

The police spokesman from the Dominican Republic states that the suspects managed to use the shoelaces from the security guard’s shoes to tie his ankles and wrists together. However, no one was hurt, and no shots were fired, yet the incident left many players and staff members feeling ‘shaken.’

Robbers also got away with some baseball equipment belonging to the Cardinals.

John Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, also released a statement addressing the crime.

“This was scary on many fronts. The team will reassess its security at the complex immediately.”

The police have not determined the total value of the heist, and are awaiting a list of items that have gone missing from the facility. So far, no suspects have been identified.
