Spurs’ Becky Hammon to interview for Bucks head coaching job

Becky Hammon

The first female assistant coach in NBA history, Becky Hammon of the San Antonio Spurs has already made history. She’ll now take that to the next level, reportedly interviewing for the Milwaukee Bucks’ head coaching job here soon.

“The Milwaukee Bucks plan to interview San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon for the franchise’s head coach opening,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday evening.

Hammon, 41, has been an assistant for the Spurs since 2014. She previously acted as the head coach for the franchise’s Summer League team a couple years back.

The Bucks themselves are casting a wide net in a search for a new head coach after a premature playoff exit this season. It’s not yet known where Hammon stands as a candidate. But the simple fact that she will be interviewed tells us a story of someone that’s widely respected around NBA circles.

Prior to her coaching career, Hammon played women’s basketball professionally from 1999-2012, including a stint with the WNBA’s New York Liberty.
