The 2020 college football season is finally underway and it started with a bang on Saturday with Austin Peay running back CJ Evans’ remarkable touchdown run.

While football fans might not have expected to be glued to ESPN to watch an FCS battle between Austin Peay and Central Arkansas, that’s what everyone was doing on Saturday night. With the COVID-19 pandemic sidelining every other team, the Governors and Bears kicked things off in style.

After the opening kickoff, Austin Peay’s offense took the field for the first offensive snap of football season. Within seconds, Evans Jr. turned the pitch into a play that no one will soon forget.

Not only was it the first touchdown this fall, it was also the first in Evans’ collegiate career. The 5-foot-9 running back committed to the Governors earlier this year and made a stunning impact on his very first play.

The true freshman clearly boasts some incredible speed, with some nice elusiveness in the open field. Given how many Power 5 teams won’t take the field this season, Evans Jr. might be one of the best running backs in college football this fall.

As he sped his way towards the end zone to provide the 2020 college football season with an epic start, the sports world lit up with celebration at football’s return. Of course, Evans quickly became a folk hero on social media.
