Special teams ace Devin Hester likely to retire

Devin Hester holds the NFL record for most combined kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns. He’s been an elite-level return man for the better part of the past decade. And after playing one game as a member of the Seattle Seahawks, it now appears that Hester is about to call it quits.

“I told my wife it’s pretty much my last year,” Hester told reporters following Saturday’s loss to Atlanta, via The News Tribune. “I was hoping for a run to the Super Bowl. The only thing that I left out of this game is walking away without getting a ring. It’s tough.”

Hester, 34, seemingly turned the game around in a big way on Saturday, returning this punt for a touchdown in the second quarter (watch here). This would have given Seattle a 10-point lead. Unfortunately a penalty on the Seahawks negated the long return. And just a few plays later, Atlanta would force a Seahawks safety to pull the game to within one point.

In the end, Atlanta came out on top 36-20 in what appears to have been Hester’s final game in the NFL.

Hester, a four-time Pro Bowler, is considered the greatest return man in the modern history of the game. He played for four teams in an 11-year NFL career that saw him put up nearly 30,000 all-purpose yards.
