Scott Frost confirms he will coach UCF in Peach Bowl

UCF head coach Scott Frost

The day UCF beat Memphis in double-overtime to finish with a perfect 13-0 record, Scott Frost was also announced as the next head coach of Nebraska. During the aftermath of that crazy sequence of events, a little-reported bit of news broke that he and his coaching staff would still coach the Knights in their bowl game.

It seemed too good to be true and is certainly not normal in college football these days. Now, out of his own mouth, Frost has confirmed he will coach UCF at the Peach Bowl against Auburn.

“There’s some unusual circumstances but we’re gonna handle this as we would any bowl game of this type,” Frost said according to the Omaha World-Herald. “Our staff is completely committed and we’re going to do everything we can for this football team. …

“It’s an honor to be invited to this game. These players have poured their hearts out to accomplish a lot this year. There’s been a lot of circumstances swirling around this season and that’s been tough to navigate but they’ve been great with that. I’m grateful we have a chance to give them their best possible chance to put on the best show in Atlanta and win a football game.”

Really, one could not write a better movie script. Frost transformed the UCF program in two short years. The Knights went 0-12 in 2015 before Frost took over in 2016. He guided the program to a 6-7 record last season and then went undefeated in 2017, earning a coveted New Year’s Six Bowl in the process.

Many, including this scribe, believe UCF should actually be competing for a championship with the top-four teams. But at this point the Knights will take what they can get.

After the bowl game, Josh Heupel will take over going forward. But for one more glorious game, it’s Frost’s show to run. And we cannot wait to see how he caps off his glorious final campaign with the Knights before taking on his next challenge to transform Nebraska into a contender again.
