The San Francisco 49ers seem to be in the midst of a couple contract disputes. While star tight end Vernon Davis plans to show up for mandatory minicamp next week, it appears that starting right guard Alex Boone will be a no show.
Sources close to the situation have indicated to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio that Boone is unlikely to show up for the three-day camp next week. The big thing here is that missing the mandatory team activity will cost Boone a ton of money, as Florio suggests…
Sure, it’ll cost nearly $70,000 if Boone doesn’t show up at any point during the minicamp. But Boone is serious about getting a new deal, and the only leverage he can muster comes from withholding services.
The Pro Bowl caliber guard already left $50 thousand on the table by missing early team activities this offseason and seems to be playing hard ball here.
San Francisco may have bigger fish to fry. Even after signing Colin Kaepernick to a long-term extension, it has to worry about a few stars who will become free agents following the 2014 season, including Mike Iupati and Michael Crabtree.
Boone is under contract through the 2015 season and doesn’t necessarily have much leverage outside of holding out. It’s highly unlikely he will miss any time during training camp, let alone preseason or regular season action. Boone is slated to make $2.2 million in 2014 and $1.2 million in 2015.
