Sam Darnold takes ‘bulk’ of first-team reps for second consecutive day

On Sunday, Sam Darnold took the “vast majority” of first-team reps as the New York Jets held joint practices with the Washington Redskins.

On Monday, the rookie quarterback was once again the main man for the Jets, as detailed by Rich Cimini of ESPN. “First-team rep breakdown today: Darnold 14, Josh McCown 4, Teddy Bridgewater 3. Total rep breakdown: Darnold 22, Bridgewater 16, McCown 4.”

Cimini noted that head coach Todd Bowles would not say who will start Thursday when the Jets take on the Redskins, but it sure does seem like Darnold is going to be the guy under center when the game begins.

The No. 3 overall pick certainly looked the part of starter in his first preseason action, going for 96 yards and his first touchdown (watch here) on 13-of-18 passing.

The Jets really have nothing to lose by starting Darnold in Week 1 if he continues to build upon his early success. With that in mind, we expect we’ll see plenty more of the USC product in the coming weeks as the team evaluates its options.
