Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott knew a thing or two about eventual teammate Joe Montana dating back to their days as college rivals.
Lott starred for the USC Trojans at the same time Montana was tossing passes for Notre Dame in South Bend. Needless to say, the two were not really friendly at that point in their amateur careers. Lott talked Rich Salgado about that in a recent appearance on Sportsnaut’s Big Daddy & Friends. It was pretty hilarious.
Ronnie Lott talks college rivalry with Joe Montana
“You know, all of a sudden you got this guy. Who I know. Who I had to compete against. Who, like you, I didn’t like this guy. He was at Notre Dame. I remember competing against him his senior year,” Lott told Big Daddy. “And I realized, man, that dude is good. I was like, man, Joe Montana is amazing.”
USC went on to win that game 27-25 after Notre Dame came all the way back with 19 unanswered fourth-quarter points before a field goal by Trojans kicker Frank Jordan iced the game. With that said, Montana’s ability to lead his team back in said game was a sign of things to come once he entered the NFL the following season. Ronnie Lott talked about that, too.
“And the reason that he was amazing, the more you got to know him, you know how on Superman, people are trying to figure out if that’s a cape or not? My point to you is that he was (and still is) one of the great, great guys. One of the guys that when you throw up the ball in life, you want to play with him. You want to be on his side. You want to play with him, because, he’s got your back. You want to play with him, because, whatever you do, he’s going to find a way to try to win.”
San Francisco 49ers dynasty with Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana
Joe Montana was eventually selected in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft by San Francisco. Lott joined him in Northern California two years later. The rest is history (almost literally).
Lott and Joe Montana would end up being core members of the 49ers’ dynastic teams of the 1980s, helping lead them to a resounding four Super Bowl titles during that span. This included a comeback win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII.
All said, Joe Montana threw 11 touchdowns against zero interceptions in his four Super Bowl appearances. Yeah, Lott knows what he’s talking about when it comes to that Superman cape.
