Robert Griffin III: ‘I feel I’m the NFL’s best quarterback’

If the mantra “confidence is key” carries any truth, then Robert Griffin III is bound for greatness.

In an interview with WJLA-TV (h/t ESPN), Griffin said it’s imperative to believe he’s the best quarterback in the NFL—no matter what.

“I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league, and I have to go out and show that. Any athlete at any level, if they concede to someone else, they’re not a top competitor, they’re not trying to be the best that they can be. … There’s guys in this league that have done way more than me. But I still view myself as the best because that’s what I work toward every single day.”

The problem, however, is that the Washington football team’s gunslinger hasn’t shown that skill on the field, especially not since a solid rookie campaign.

Over the last two seasons, RG3 has tossed 20 touchdowns compared to 18 interceptions. He was benched by the end of both the 2013 and 2014 campaigns due to poor performance.

This year, Griffin is engaged in a three-way race for Washington’s starting job, competing with Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy. Both players have replaced the Baylor product under center, so RG3 is by no means secure at the top of the battle for the initial nod in 2015.

Griffin can believe he’s the best, and if it keeps the fourth-year quarterback confident that he can make a difference, great. But if RG3 doesn’t improve on Sundays, that confidence doesn’t exactly matter.
