Washington Redskins backup quarterback Robert Griffin III has finally been cleared of concussions symptoms by an independent neurologist according to the team’s president Bruce Allen.
So, RG3 can now play. But does it really matter?
He lost the starting job to former backup Kirk Cousins after a tumultuous preseason campaign. And, interestingly enough, head coach Jay Gruden said he would wait to make the announcement as to who who would backup Cousins after Griffin got cleared. Although, it would appear that Washington has already leaning towards Colt McCoy for the backup job.
It’s worth pointing out that Griffin claimed he never even had a concussion. This is likely due to the fact that he practiced in full the following week after he took the hit. It was at that point the independent neurologist changed his opinion about the quarterback’s condition. While RG3 sat sidelined, he was stripped of his starting job.
Whether Griffin will ever be called upon to start or not remains to be seen this season. All we can assess from this situation is that it really doesn’t matter which Washington quarterback is under center—the team’s chances of winning games looks about as dreary as it did last year.
All three quarterbacks were dreadfully underwhelming in 2014. Griffin sported a 2-5 record and tossed six picks and four touchdowns last year. Cousins was no better posting a 1-4 record with nine interceptions to 10 touchdowns. And, lastly, McCoy went 1-3 with four touchdowns to three interceptions.
While the news that RG3 can resume his activities is wonderful and all, the team will still be lucky to win more than a handful of games this season.
