Richard Sherman did his part in his first home game as a member of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The future Hall of Fame cornerback was targeted just once and didn’t allow a single catch in what ended up being a 30-27 win over the Detroit Lions.
Like most of us watching the outing, Sherman didn’t believe his 49ers were terribly impressive. In fact, he noted after the game that it felt more like a loss.

That’s the type of attitude this young 49ers team needs. It held a 30-13 advantage early in the fourth quarter, only to see Matthew Stafford lead Detroit on two consecutive touchdown-scoring drives to make a game of it.
While Sherman and the 49ers’ defense did force a turnover on downs to take Detroit out, it was a brutal late-game performance from this unit.
For his part, Sherman is potentially setting the stage for next week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has accounted for 10 touchdowns in the first two games of the season.
A similar performance from San Francisco’s secondary will more than likely result in a blowout loss. Sherman knows that, and he was likely making sure his teammates do too.
