California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Fair Play to Pay Act into law Monday morning, which allows student athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness.
Newsom shared the news via Twitter, along with video of a conversation he had with LeBron James about the impact of this law.
The NCAA has since released a statement in response to this law, which has plenty of detractors, including one of the most prominent people in media covering college football.
One person who is decidedly for this new law is former Stanford student/athlete and current San Francisco 49ers star, Richard Sherman.
Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News shared Sherman’s comments about the law, which include him calling out the NCAA as “corrupt” and hoping the new law “destroys the NCAA in general.”
Certainly, the debate is far from over regarding this law, and what other states are considering that may be similar in nature. The one thing we have no question about is which side of the fence Sherman is standing on.
