The New England Patriots will face plenty of competition to retain one of their best players and most important leaders this offseason. Fortunately for New England, safety Devin McCourty is determined to play in 2020 and will not consider retirement.
McCourty’s agent, ANdy Simms, told ESPN that “retirement is not an option” for the 32-year-old safety and he is determined to continue his playing career in 2020 even if it isn’t with the Patriots.
McCourty, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time Super Bowl champion, delivered another outstanding season as New England’s top safety. He recorded five interceptions, his highest total since 2012, and deflected seven passes with two forced fumbles.
If McCourty hits free agency, he could potentially look towards the New York Giants or Miami Dolphins as compelling options. The Dolphins are coached by former Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores and New York recently hired Joe Judge as their head coach.
The Patriots have several key free agents to try and bring back for the 2020 season. McCourty should be a priority to make sure he ends his career in New England.
