Report: Wade Phillips could leave Rams after 2019 season

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Rams may have to look for a new defensive coordinator after the 2019 season, as Wade Phillips may not return to the team in 2020.

Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio shared that Phillips is set to meet with Rams head coach Sean McVay after the season and that linebacker coach Joe Barry “would be a strong replacement candidate.”

Phillips has been the defensive coordinator for McVay in Los Angeles since the 2017 season. His defenses the past few seasons haven’t been top notch, ranking 19th in 2017 and 2018, but this season the Rams rank 12th in total defense heading into Week 16.

Phillips is a legend, and he has a knack for connecting with his players, regardless of age or era.

A head coach for three teams over the course of his four-plus-decade career, he will have other opportunities available to him if he decides to part ways with the Rams.
