Report: Vikings close to finalizing five-year, $70 million extension with Xavier Rhodes

Xavier Rhodes

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes is one of the best young players at his position. And despite struggling with consistency last season, the Vikings know this very well. Entering the final year of Rhodes’ rookie contract, it’s being reported that Minnesota is close to signing the 27-year-old former first-round pick to a sizable extension.

“Sources said Saturday the Vikings were close to finalizing a lucrative contract extension for cornerback Xavier Rhodes,”Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. “One source anticipates the extension to be in the range of $70 million over five years. Such a deal would put Rhodes under contract through the 2022 season.”

That $70 million deal would make Rhodes the third-highest paid corner in the NFL in terms of total value. At $14 million per season, he would also be the third-highest paid corner in that category.

Rhodes, a first-round pick of the Vikings back in 2013, recorded 52 tackles, 10 passes defended, five interceptions and this amazing touchdown last season. He’s going to remain a cornerstone for one of the most-talented defenses in the game.
