Report: ‘Strong likelihood’ Cowboys release Tony Romo on Thursday

Tony Romo has no plans to file his retirement paperwork

It’s been pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Dallas Cowboys would be parting ways with former Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo shortly after the start of free agency on Thursday. With Dak Prescott etched in stone as the team’s starter and Romo set to count nearly $25 million against the cap, the writing has been on the wall for some time now.

The biggest question here is whether Romo will be traded or released.

According to CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, it now looks likely that Romo will be released once free agency opens Thursday afternoon.

That’s long been the likeliest scenario as it relates to the imminent departure of Romo from the only team he’s played for throughout a strong 13-year NFL career.

If Romo is indeed released once free agency opens, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him meet with the Denver Broncos out of the gate. The two have been linked on a consistent basis over the past several months with recent suggestions indicating Denver would likely consider signing the veteran should he be released (more on that here).

Romo, 36, has started a total of four games over the past two seasons due to a plethora of injuries. When healthy, he’s still a top-10 quarterback in the NFL.

Outside of Denver, the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins have been linked to the four-time Pro Bowl signal caller.
