The San Antonio Spurs reportedly would like to put the entire messy business between star Kawhi Leonard and the franchise behind them and have a good idea about how to make that happen.
According to Tom Osborn of the San Antonio-Express News, the Spurs want to set up a meeting with Leonard “in a bid to mend fences and pave the way for Leonard to come to terms on a five-year, $219 million supermax contract that he will be eligible to receive starting July 1.”
Considering some of the reports that have emerged about the toxic relationship between Leonard and head coach Gregg Popovich in recent months, this is welcome news for those who wish to see Leonard remain in San Antonio.
There have been plenty of whispers that Leonard could be moved in a trade. But those rumors have cooled a bit recently as well, with the latest being that it would take a “grand-slam offer” to get San Antonio to even consider such a move.
The 2017-18 season was pretty much a wasted one for Leonard and the Spurs. He only appeared in nine games total due to a lingering quad injury that was an issue even before the campaign began.
Perhaps this latest report indicates things are finally turning around for the 2014 NBA Finals MVP, who has also won the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award twice and is among the best two-way players in the game today.
