Report: SMU close to hiring Georgia State’s Rob Lanier

SMU is set to hire Georgia State’s Rob Lanier to replace retired men’s basketball coach Tim Jankovich, CBS Sports reported Saturday.

Lanier guided Georgia State to the 2022 NCAA Tournament, where the 16th-seeded Panthers (18-11) lost 93-72 to No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the first round of the West Region.

Lanier, 53, has compiled a 53-30 record through three seasons at the Sun Belt Conference school. He also went 58-70 in four seasons as the head coach at Siena (2001-05).

His coaching experience includes two separate stints in Texas as an assistant for the Longhorns (1999-2001, 2011-15). Lanier was also an assistant at Niagara, St. Bonaventure, Rutgers, Virginia, Florida and Tennessee.

Jankovich, 62, retired Tuesday after a 24-9 season in order to spend more time with his family. His overall record at SMU was 125-64.
